Besides sugar production, Mumias Sugar Company (MSC) produces power through burning of baggasse, a waste product from sugarcane processing and in the process, contributes immensely to carbon emission reduction as no oil, coal or gas is used in our power generation. Our current capacity stands at 13.6 Megawatts most of which is utilizes on sugar production and domestic use. Mumias has the capacity to export 5.5 Megawatts to the national grid but currently exports 2.2 Megawatts only due to Inward/Outward carriage limitation. Following the drought of the year 2000, Mumias was able to provide 2MW of energy to the rest of Kenyans through selling it to Kenya Power and Lighting Company. Today, of the 13MW we produce, we are selling 2.2MW to them. Three years ago, MSC developed a capacity expansion and product diversification programme to which Co-generation was core. To be able to make a contribution to the energy sector, the company is now in the final stages of implementing this mammoth Kshs.4.5 billion Co-generation Project which upon completion will enable MSC to generate 35MW of electricity. Of this, 12MW will be consumed by the factory and 26MW made available for export to the national grid.
